Putting effective data capture systems in place in your business is one of the most important marketing activities you can engage in, so you can collect the relevant data from as many of those who come into contact with your business as possible.

Celebrated novelist Bryce Courtenay was an advertising guru before he became a best-selling author, and he understands the value of establishing and developing customer relationships very clearly.

In his excellent relationship marketing book The Power of One to One (not to be confused with his hugely successful novel, The Power of One), he is very blunt about businesses which do not at least collect the names and addresses of their customers.

“You should have the names of all your customers and prospects. But, lamentably, many Australian and New Zealand businesses do not have this basic data. This is simply unforgivable! If relationship marketing is a datadriven form of advertising, and you are missing the data, then in short, you’re stuffed!”
